Two young engineers from Katsina State, Engr. Magaji Abdullahi Yankara and Engr. Lukman Rabiu Faskari, are making waves in Nigeria’s tech and mobility space with their homegrown electric vehicle (EV) prototypes.

In partnership with students from a secondary school in Sokoto, the innovators built EVs capable of carrying six to twelve passengers. The project has earned recognition from the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and attracted media attention across Nigeria and beyond.

Operating through the Research, Innovation, and Development Department at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, the team is pushing for the integration of EV technology into school curricula. They have designed a teaching module for senior secondary classes and plan to train instructors to deliver it.

Looking ahead, they aim to set up an EV training and innovation hub at the Katsina Youths Crafts Village (KYCV), with the ambition of turning Katsina into a national centre for electric mobility.

The engineers say they are equipped to design and build various classes of EVs and are calling for Katsina State Government’s support to scale their work, boost local tech capacity, and generate youth employment in the emerging green mobility sector.
