Nigeria’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Shehu Ilu Barde, has arrived in Accra to formally assume his duties as the country’s chief diplomatic representative in the West African nation.

Ambassador Barde arrived in the Ghanaian capital on June 18, where he was warmly received by officials of the Nigerian High Commission, members of the Defence Section, the Nigerian Trade Commission, and representatives of the Nigerian community residing in Ghana.

His deployment follows his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March 2026 as part of a broader diplomatic posting involving several Nigerian ambassadors assigned to missions across the globe.

A seasoned career diplomat, Ambassador Barde joined Nigeria’s Foreign Service in 1995 and has accumulated extensive experience through postings in Burkina Faso, the United States, Ethiopia, and France. His distinguished service earned him elevation to the rank of Ambassador-in-Situ in 2022, while his contributions to Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts were further recognised with a Presidential Commendation in 2023.

As Nigeria’s new envoy to Ghana, Ambassador Barde is expected to strengthen the longstanding bilateral relationship between both countries and advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, security, regional integration, education, and cultural exchange.

Born in Katsina State in 1967, Ambassador Barde holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Bayero University, Kano. He has also undergone extensive professional training at the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in Lagos and participated in several diplomatic, leadership, and management programmes within and outside Nigeria.

Throughout his more than three decades in public service, Ambassador Barde has played active roles in numerous bilateral and multilateral engagements, representing Nigeria at meetings of the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and other international forums.

His arrival in Accra marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria-Ghana diplomatic relations, with expectations that his wealth of experience will contribute significantly to enhancing cooperation and promoting shared regional and continental objectives.
