Nigeria is stepping up efforts to strengthen its security capabilities through deeper cooperation with the United States, as Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar highlighted the growing importance of advanced military technology in the country's fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

Speaking during a visit to Nigeria’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., the minister said cutting-edge U.S. defence assets, particularly drone technology and satellite-based intelligence, have become increasingly valuable in supporting military operations against armed groups and other emerging security threats across the country.

The visit formed part of broader discussions aimed at reinforcing the long-standing defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, with particular attention on counter-terrorism efforts and the ongoing modernisation of the Armed Forces.

Despite seeking stronger cooperation with Washington, the minister stressed that Nigeria remains committed to safeguarding its sovereignty. He noted that while the country continues to broaden its network of international defence partners, all strategic engagements are guided by national interests and conducted without compromising Nigeria’s independence.

According to a statement issued by the minister’s media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the talks centred on expanding collaboration in intelligence gathering, military training and defence support, areas considered crucial to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Receiving the minister at the embassy, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Kayode Are, praised the security reforms being implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He also pledged the embassy’s support in facilitating stronger diplomatic and military cooperation between both countries.

Beyond bilateral relations, the discussions examined growing security concerns across the Sahel region, where extremist activities and cross-border threats continue to pose challenges for neighbouring countries. Both sides underscored the need for stronger regional partnerships and coordinated security frameworks to confront the changing threat landscape.

The minister later toured the embassy’s Defence Section, commending Defence Attaché Air Commodore Valentine Oreaki and members of his team for their service. He urged them to remain committed to professionalism, discipline and excellence in representing Nigeria’s military interests abroad.

The Washington engagement concluded a week-long series of activities involving a high-powered Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, reflecting the Federal Government’s continued push to strengthen international security partnerships amid ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity at home.
