Radda Launches Distribution of 90,000 Grain Bags to Katsina Residents

The Katsina State Government has launched the distribution of 90,000 bags of grains to vulnerable residents across the state’s 34 local government areas as part of efforts to cushion the effects of economic hardship and improve food security.

The intervention is targeted at widows, elderly people, persons with disabilities and families facing severe economic challenges.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Hajiya Zainab Musa Musawa, said the grain distribution was part of the government’s efforts to support vulnerable members of society and ensure that no segment of the population was left behind.

She called on stakeholders involved in the exercise to ensure that the grains were distributed transparently and fairly to deserving beneficiaries.

The Chairman of the Community Development Programme (CDP), Dr Kamaladdeen Kabir, said the distribution would be carried out through Community-Level Committees (CLCs) to ensure that the most vulnerable people were identified and reached at the grassroots.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda also directed officials and other stakeholders involved in the distribution to uphold transparency, fairness and accountability, while avoiding discrimination or favouritism.

The exercise is being implemented in collaboration with community committees, traditional rulers, religious leaders, local government authorities and security agencies.

In his remarks, the Katsina State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Bishir Gambo Saulawa, commended Governor Radda for introducing programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.

He described the grain distribution as an important demonstration of the government’s efforts to reduce the hardship faced by people in need.

The Hakimi of Kaita and Sarkin Sullubawan Katsina also expressed appreciation to the state government, commending the inclusion of traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders in the implementation of the programme.

The state government said the grain distribution was part of broader measures to improve food security, including the provision of fertiliser and agricultural inputs at affordable prices, irrigation pumps and boreholes to increase agricultural production and reduce food costs.

The programme builds on previous government interventions, including support for 7,220 widows, as well as the distribution of food items and financial assistance to small-scale traders across 361 wards in the state during Ramadan. The government has also distributed food items in partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation.

The launch was attended by the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Malam Farouq Lawal Jobe, commissioners, government officials, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
