The National Judicial Council (NJC) has suspended Justice Hannatu Mohammed Kabir of the Nasarawa State High Court for one year without pay over misconduct involving the unlawful detention of a man for 58 days.

The council also recommended that her promotion be withheld for three years as part of disciplinary measures against her.

The NJC said its investigation established that Justice Kabir ordered the detention of the individual for 58 days over alleged contempt of court without following the required legal procedures.

According to the council, the judge failed to issue Forms 48 and 49, which are statutory notices that must be served on an individual before contempt proceedings can be initiated.

The investigation further established that the alleged contempt occurred outside the courtroom, making it improper to punish the individual summarily without giving him an opportunity to defend himself.

The disciplinary action was announced following the conclusion of the NJC's 112th meeting held in Abuja, where the council considered several cases involving judicial officers.

Other judges suspended for one year without pay include the Grand Kadi of the Jigawa State Sharia Court of Appeal, Mohammed Sani Salihu, and Justice Sobere Biambo of the Rivers State High Court.
