Residents of Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State are grappling with fresh waves of violence after armed bandits reportedly launched coordinated attacks on at least 17 villages, leaving a trail of deaths, abductions and destruction in their wake.
The attacks, which reportedly began on Friday, have forced many families to flee their homes amid growing fears of further assaults. Communities affected by the violence are said to have been thrown into panic as residents struggle to protect their lives and property.
A situational report released by the Faskari chapter of the Nigerian Human Rights Protection and Initiative revealed that the assailants not only killed and kidnapped residents but also looted valuables and livestock from the affected communities.
The organisation's coordinator in the area, Shamsudeen Sulaiman, said the scale of the attacks had left many households devastated, with livestock and other economic assets carted away by the attackers.
According to the group, no fewer than 17 villages came under attack during the period, resulting in multiple casualties and several cases of abduction.
The development has heightened anxiety across Faskari, with many residents expressing concerns over their safety and the worsening security situation in the area.
Reacting to the incident, the Nigerian Human Rights Protection and Initiative called for immediate action from security agencies, urging authorities to strengthen security operations in the affected communities and work towards rescuing those still in captivity.
Meanwhile, a government official and resident of Faskari, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, linked the latest violence to what he described as a retaliatory response following an incident involving soldiers from neighbouring Zamfara State.
According to him, the soldiers allegedly intercepted some Fulani individuals returning from the weekly Wednesday market in Yankara and identified some among them as suspects connected to recent banditry activities in Zamfara. The individuals were reportedly taken away by the military after being traced to the market.
The official claimed that since the incident occurred last week, communities across Faskari have witnessed a resurgence of insecurity marked by attacks, killings and kidnappings.
He warned that the renewed violence is taking a heavy toll on residents, many of whom can no longer access their farmlands due to fears of being attacked.
The source further lamented that the situation threatens gains recorded through a recent peace arrangement that had encouraged farmers to return to their fields ahead of the harvest season.
"People had started returning to their farms and preparing for harvest after the peace agreement. Unfortunately, these fresh attacks have disrupted everything and left many families living in fear again," he said.
As concerns mount over the deteriorating security situation, the Katsina State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the reported attacks as of the time of filing this report.
