Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has directed security agencies to immediately halt the activities of a group reportedly operating under the name Hisbah in parts of Jos North Local Government Area, declaring its operations unlawful.
The governor also ordered the arrest and investigation of individuals linked to the group, warning that anyone found culpable would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
The directive follows allegations that members of the group have been enforcing unauthorised regulations, intimidating residents, extorting members of the public and promoting a parallel system of law in some communities within the state.
In a statement issued by the governor's office, Mutfwang expressed concern over reports of the group's activities, stressing that no organisation or individual has the authority to exercise powers outside those granted by law.
He reaffirmed that Plateau State operates under a single legal framework recognised by the Constitution and maintained that there is only one legitimate authority responsible for law enforcement and governance in the state.
The governor warned all persons associated with the reported activities to immediately cease operations or risk arrest and prosecution.
Mutfwang further directed security agencies to take all necessary measures to enforce the government's directive and ensure that no group undermines public order or the rule of law.
He emphasized his administration's commitment to protecting the rights of all residents, maintaining peace and ensuring that lawful institutions remain the only recognised channels for enforcing regulations across the state.
