The Bindawa community in Katsina State has celebrated four of its prominent indigenes for their professional accomplishments and contributions to local development, as a community foundation renewed calls for greater support for vulnerable residents.
Those honoured by the Bindawa Socio-Economic Foundation include retired Maj.-Gen. Junaidu Bindawa, recently appointed Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission; Alhaji Zakari Maina, the new District Head of Bindawa and Dan Yusufan Katsina; and two academics, Professors Mohammed Sulaiman-Bindawa and Mudassir Nasir-Bindawa, who recently attained professorial rank.
The recognition ceremony, held on Monday in Bindawa, was the foundation’s first since its establishment in 2013. Its chairman, Dr Umar Hassan-Bindawa, said the awardees were selected for their achievements and contributions to the advancement of their community.
He explained that the foundation was established to improve the lives of disadvantaged residents through humanitarian assistance and educational support, with the aim of promoting sustainable development.
Providing further insight into the foundation’s work, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Prof. Mohammed Khalid-Othman, said the organisation was created to complement government efforts to improve the welfare of the people.
Khalid-Othman, who initiated the foundation and chaired the event, disclosed that it provides food and clothing to more than 300 vulnerable people annually. It also helps students pay their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination fees.
He appealed to wealthy individuals and other well-meaning members of the community to support the initiative, stressing that additional resources would help the foundation extend its humanitarian services to more people.
The Chairman of Bindawa Local Government Area, Badaru Musa-Giremawa, represented by Bindawa Ward Councillor Haruna Ali, commended the foundation, describing its interventions as a valuable contribution to efforts to improve the welfare of disadvantaged members of society.
Responding on behalf of the recipients, retired Maj.-Gen. Junaidu Bindawa said the recognition would inspire them to intensify their efforts towards community development. He added that the well-being and progress of Bindawa residents remained important priorities for them.
The newly appointed district head, Zakari Maina, also called for stronger unity among community leaders, noting that cooperation and a shared commitment to development were crucial to the area's progress.
The ceremony underscored the importance of recognising local achievers while strengthening community-led efforts to tackle social challenges, support education and improve the lives of vulnerable residents.
