Journalists and media professionals in Katsina State on Monday participated in a capacity-building programme focused on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern journalism, as industry experts highlighted the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies in news production.

The training, titled “AI for Journalists: U.S. Technologies Transforming News Production,” was organized by Window on America Katsina and held at the National Library of Nigeria, Katsina. The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

The first session of the two-part training featured Chris Coates, Senior Director of Local News at Lee Enterprises, one of the largest newspaper groups in the United States. Coates, who oversees editorial strategy and newsroom transformation across more than 70 local news organizations in 25 states, shared practical insights into the integration of AI technologies within contemporary newsrooms.

Drawing from over 20 years of newsroom experience, Coates explained how artificial intelligence is increasingly being deployed to enhance journalistic workflows, improve audience engagement, streamline research processes and support newsroom innovation.

Participants were introduced to a range of AI-powered tools and applications currently being utilized by media organizations around the world. Discussions focused on how journalists can effectively employ these technologies for research, information gathering, content organization, data analysis and story development while maintaining professional standards and editorial integrity.

A significant aspect of the session centered on responsible AI usage in journalism. Participants were reminded that while AI can serve as a valuable tool for increasing efficiency and productivity, it does not replace the fundamental principles of journalism, including accuracy, fairness, verification and accountability.

The facilitator emphasized that journalists must exercise caution when using AI-generated content, noting that newsroom professionals remain solely responsible for verifying information before publication and ensuring that reports meet established ethical standards.

The training also addressed effective prompting techniques, enabling participants to better understand how to interact with AI systems to obtain relevant, accurate and contextually appropriate outputs. Interactive discussions further examined concerns surrounding misinformation, bias, transparency and the potential risks associated with overreliance on automated technologies.

Throughout the session, participants engaged in question-and-answer segments and interactive polls, sharing perspectives on the future of journalism in an increasingly AI-driven media environment.

Speaking on the importance of adapting to technological advancements, participants noted that AI literacy is becoming an essential skill for journalists seeking to remain competitive and effective in the digital age.

The training reflects a broader global conversation about the future of journalism, where technological innovation continues to reshape how news is gathered, produced and distributed.
