THE KATSINA ROYAL REGALIA: ORIGIN, HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE IN KATSINA EMIRATE

ROYAL REGALIA

 Royal Regalia are the official ceremonial objects and symbols of royalty. They represents the authority, power, dignity, and legitimacy of a king or Emir. 

THE MAIN ROYAL REGALIA OF KATSINA EMIRATE. 

  Katsina Emirate has (4) most important Royal Regalia, each one has its history and meaning. 

1. GAJERE ( THE SHORT ONE). 

  This is the sword Korau used in killing Sanau during an annual wrestling in the year 1348. This  sword, Gajere, is the one the Emir of Katsina holds in his hand on the day of the Sallah celebration or Durbar. (Aminu, 2024,pp160). And on the day of the installation ceremony of the new  Emir of Katsina, the Kauran Katsina hands this sword over to the new Emir.

That sword has on one side an Arabic inscription  from the Holy Qur'an chapter 61 verse 13, which translate to, ". Help from Allah and a speedy victory". And on the other side the Arabic inscription translate to, " there is no sword except Dhul-Faqar and no hero except Ali" ( Luggard S. 1993,pp32).  

2. BEBE ( THE DEAF ONE). 

 It is a sword captured on the battle field, after the great victory of  Sarkin Katsina Agwaragi in 1795 against  Sarkin Gobir Yakuba. This sword is called Bebe, it is the one the Emir of Katsina wears on his shoulder on the day of the Sallah celebration or at Durbar. And also, on the day of the installation ceremony of the new Emir of Katsina, the Kauran Katsina places this sword on the Emir's shoulder. ( Nadabo2014, pp10). 

3. TUKUNYAR KARFE( BRONZE POT). 

It is the bronze/medicine pot of Sarkin Katsina Korau(1348-1398). In the olden days, it was used for making medicine for warriors during war. The medicine is used to heal, protect, and add spiritual power of the Emir. On the day of the installation of the new Emir of Katsina, the Yandakan Katsina presents the Bronze pot, Tukunyar Karfe to the new Emir of Katsina ( Greene 1964, p158). 

(4). GWAURON TAMBARI (ROYAL DRUM). 

It is the oldest drum in Katsina Emirate. The Gwauron Tambari is said to be originated during the reign of Habe Kings of Katsina. The Drum is beaten 12 times by Galadiman  Katsina during the installation of a new Emir of Katsina. This shows that there is an official announcement  that we have a new Emir. ( Nadabo  2014, p211).

IMPORTANCE OF THE ROYAL REGALIA IN KATSINA  EMIRATE. 

The  Katsina Royal Regalia prove that the new Emir is the rightful ruler. They also connect the new Emir to all past kings. Gajere and Tukunyar Karfe are from 500 plus years ago, each item gives the Emir a specific kind of power, justice, and proclamation. 

Not only that, the staff of office which the Governor or Resident would hand over to the Emir on the day of the installation ceremony of the new Emir has some historical importance, because it shows the recognition of the new Emir by the British during colonial rule or the State Governor at present. This continue in which subsequent Emir's that followed Emir Dikko were given staff of office as a symbol of authority.
