Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to strengthen their commitment to democratic ideals, national unity and active citizenship as the country celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

In a Democracy Day message released on Friday through his spokesman, Eseme Eyibo, Akpabio described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a remarkable testament to the resilience and determination of its people despite periods of political and social challenges.

He commended Nigerians for sustaining democratic governance over nearly three decades and expressed optimism that the nation would continue to make progress despite setbacks encountered along the way.

According to him, the country's democratic experience has not been without difficulties, but collective commitment and support from citizens would help Nigeria achieve its aspirations.

The Senate President urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith in democracy and resist attempts by forces opposed to progress to undermine the nation's democratic institutions.

He stressed that democracy should not be measured solely by periodic elections but by the extent to which it promotes accountability, justice, compassion and service to the people.

Akpabio also encouraged young Nigerians to take a more active role in politics and governance, noting that the future leadership of the country rests on the shoulders of the younger generation.

“As we commemorate June 12, I urge our young people to move beyond the sidelines and participate actively in shaping the nation’s future. They represent the next generation of leaders and must begin preparing themselves for that responsibility,” he said.

He further called on citizens to recommit themselves to the principles of freedom, transparency, social justice and accountable governance, while promoting broader citizen participation in the democratic process.

Addressing the country's security challenges, Akpabio appealed for greater cooperation between citizens and government in tackling insecurity, terrorism and other threats to national stability.

He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains focused on restoring security across the country and securing the freedom of those currently held captive by criminal groups.

The Senate President acknowledged the hardships being experienced by many citizens but expressed confidence that ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies would yield positive results.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the administration’s fight against terrorism and insecurity, expressing hope that the nation would overcome its present challenges and emerge stronger.
