China’s advances in digital infrastructure, e-commerce and workforce development could provide a valuable roadmap for accelerating digital transformation and economic growth across BRICS nations, a Chinese researcher has said.

Xie Hongjun, a researcher at the BRICS Research Centre of the University of International Business and Economics in China, made the remarks in a report published by TV BRICS and monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Xie, China is well positioned to support fellow BRICS countries in strengthening their digital economies through collaboration in digital infrastructure development, e-commerce expansion and technological innovation.

He noted that China’s sustained investment in digital technology over the last decade has significantly transformed its economy, particularly through the rapid deployment of 5G networks, cloud computing facilities and data centres.

The researcher disclosed that China now operates more than five million 5G base stations, giving it the largest 5G network globally and placing the country at the forefront of digital connectivity.

Beyond infrastructure, Xie highlighted digital skills development as another critical area where China can share expertise with other BRICS members.

He explained that the country has invested heavily in digital education by expanding university programmes focused on emerging technologies, fostering stronger partnerships between academic institutions and industries, and creating lifelong learning systems that enable professionals to acquire new digital competencies throughout their careers.

As a result, China has built a workforce of more than 300 million digitally skilled professionals, a figure he said continues to grow in response to rising demand across sectors.

Drawing from China’s experience, Xie outlined two key lessons for BRICS countries seeking to strengthen their digital economies.

The first, he said, is the need to develop a new generation of digital talent equipped with multidisciplinary knowledge.

“Future digital talent should possess not only technological expertise but also an understanding of economics, management and international regulations,” he said.

The second lesson, according to him, is ensuring broad and equitable access to digital education.

“Digital education should not be limited to people in major cities or elite institutions. It must be accessible to everyone,” he added.

On the priorities for advancing digitalisation across BRICS economies, Xie stressed the importance of robust digital infrastructure and cyber security systems.

He argued that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and digital trade cannot thrive without reliable digital foundations and public trust in online systems.

According to him, strengthening infrastructure and cyber security remains essential to unlocking the full potential of the digital economy and driving sustainable growth across BRICS countries.
