The United States has delivered another consignment of military equipment to Nigeria, in a move expected to bolster the country’s ongoing efforts to tackle terrorism and other security threats.
The latest shipment was flown into Nigeria aboard a United States Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, which provides a framework for defence cooperation between Washington and Abuja.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced the delivery on Thursday in a post on its official X account, describing the shipment as a further indication of the growing security partnership between the two countries.
The equipment arrived over the weekend, although AFRICOM did not disclose the nature, quantity or financial value of the items supplied.
The latest development comes at a time Nigeria is intensifying its fight against terrorist and insurgent groups and seeking stronger international cooperation to improve its military capabilities.
The use of the C-17 Globemaster III, a strategic military transport aircraft, underscores the logistical scale of the cooperation, allowing defence equipment to be moved directly to Nigeria in support of its operational requirements.
The latest delivery also comes against the backdrop of renewed security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States following heightened tensions between the two countries over Nigeria’s handling of attacks and killings attributed to terrorist and insurgent groups.
US President Donald Trump had previously designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern and criticised the Nigerian government over its handling of alleged religiously motivated killings.
Trump also issued threats of possible US military action, prompting diplomatic engagements between Abuja and Washington.
In response, the Nigerian government dispatched a high-powered delegation to the United States, while American officials subsequently visited Nigeria as both countries sought to strengthen cooperation on security matters.
The renewed engagement later included the deployment of US special forces to Nigeria and joint targeted operations aimed at countering terrorist threats.
Against this background, the latest military equipment delivery is being seen as another component of the expanding defence relationship between Washington and Abuja.
While details of the equipment remain undisclosed, the shipment signals continued US support for Nigeria’s security efforts as the country confronts persistent threats from terrorism and insurgency.
