The average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has recorded a steady rise in May 2025, according to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Data from the report shows that the average cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by 3.57% month-on-month, moving from ₦7,885.60 in April 2025 to ₦8,167.43 in May 2025. On a year-on-year comparison, this represents a 10.10% increase from ₦7,418.45 in May 2024.

States with Highest and Lowest Prices (5kg Cylinder)

• Highest Prices:

  • Abia – ₦9,181.20
  • Ebonyi – ₦9,177.32
  • Rivers – ₦9,174.40

• Lowest Prices:

  • Oyo – ₦7,116.49
  • Niger – ₦7,142.07
  • Plateau – ₦7,177.10

On a zonal level, the South-South recorded the highest average price at ₦8,760.51, followed by the South-East at ₦8,724.70, while the North-Central had the lowest at ₦7,759.38.

Price Trends for 12.5kg Cylinder

The cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder also rose by 2.18% month-on-month, from ₦20,268.06 in April to ₦20,709.11 in May 2025. On a year-on-year basis, the increase was more significant, rising by 32.52% from ₦15,627.40 in May 2024.

Among regions, the South-South again topped the chart with an average price of ₦22,026.26, followed by the South-East at ₦21,811.76, while the North-West recorded the lowest at ₦19,944.10.

The continued rise in cooking gas prices reflects broader inflationary pressures and regional disparities in distribution and availability across the country.
