Sheikh Khalifa Sani Zaria Far Removed from Allegations of Accepting Funds for Coup Prayers — Prof. Maqari

A prominent Islamic scholar in Nigeria and Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja, Professor Ibrahim Maqari, has dismissed allegations linking the Tijjaniyya cleric in Zaria, Sheikh Khalifa Sani Abdulkadir, to the acceptance of money for prayers allegedly connected to a foiled military coup.

Professor Maqari made the clarification in an exclusive interview with Katsina Times on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the ongoing Maulid Week of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass in Katsina State.

According to him, the allegations against Sheikh Khalifa Sani are unfounded and inconsistent with the cleric’s long-standing reputation for piety, integrity and moral uprightness.

“We know Sheikh Khalifa Sani as a righteous, God-fearing scholar. He cannot be associated, openly or secretly, with any act that could harm the country or violate the law,” Professor Maqari said.

He stressed that anyone familiar with the Sheikh’s character and teachings would understand that such conduct runs contrary to his principles and lifelong commitment to peace and religious guidance.

“I can categorically state that Sheikh Sani Abdulkadir is far removed from what he is being accused of. He is completely innocent of these allegations,” he added.

Addressing claims that money was transferred to the cleric for prayers, Professor Maqari explained that it is common practice for individuals to send money to Islamic scholars requesting prayers, often without disclosing specific personal circumstances.

“Any of us can receive money with a request for prayers. That, in itself, does not constitute evidence of any wrongdoing,” he noted.

On reports regarding Sheikh Khalifa Sani’s release and reunion with his family, Professor Maqari said due legal processes are being followed, some of which do not necessarily require public disclosure.

“There are procedures that are handled discreetly and need not be debated in the media. What is important is that the matter is being followed diligently. It is not an issue of haste, as due process must be observed,” he said.
