Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu following the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of State Police across Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor described the Senate’s approval of the bill’s 26 clauses as a historic milestone in the country’s democratic journey and a major step toward strengthening national security.

Sanwo-Olu said the proposed State Police framework represents one of the most far-reaching reforms of Nigeria’s security architecture, with the potential to improve grassroots policing, enhance public safety and address growing security challenges nationwide.

He described the Senate’s decision as an “epochal achievement,” noting that it reflects President Tinubu’s long-standing advocacy for true federalism and governance reforms.

“Today marks a significant moment in our nation’s history and a victory for progressive ideas that prioritise development, security and democratic growth,” the governor said.

According to him, Tinubu has consistently championed the creation of State Police since his tenure as Lagos State governor between 1999 and 2007, despite opposition from various quarters.

Sanwo-Olu expressed satisfaction that the proposal, which has been a key part of Tinubu’s governance philosophy for over two decades, is now closer to becoming a reality.

He added that the establishment of State Police would strengthen efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality that continue to threaten peace, stability and economic development across the country.

The governor also commended Tinubu’s commitment to reforms aimed at deepening federalism and improving governance outcomes, describing the president’s role in advancing the initiative as pivotal.

He further praised the Senate for what he called a courageous and historic decision, while urging State Houses of Assembly to swiftly consider and approve the amendment to ensure its final adoption.

“The Senate has taken a bold and historic step. I call on State Assemblies across the federation to expedite action on the bill and help bring this critical reform into effect,” Sanwo-Olu said.
