The Katsina State Police Command says it has arrested three suspected vandals and recovered suspected stolen electric cables and other items in Rimi Local Government Area of the state.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the arrests were made as part of ongoing efforts to combat the vandalisation and theft of public infrastructure.
According to the statement, operatives attached to the Rimi Police Division, while on routine patrol at about 8:30 p.m. on August 2, intercepted three suspects in collaboration with members of the local community.
The police identified the suspects as Mansur Suleiman, 23; Mansur Hamza, 21; and Jibrin Ahmed, 28.
Police said a search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of about 60 metres of 100mm electric cable, believed to have been stolen, as well as a hacksaw, a pair of scissors, a knife, suspected criminal charms, a motorcycle and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The command said the suspects are in police custody while investigations continue, adding that they will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, CP Ali Umar Fage, commended residents of the area for their vigilance and cooperation with the police, describing community support as vital in tackling vandalism and other crimes.
He also warned individuals involved in the destruction or theft of public and private infrastructure to desist, stressing that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
