In a landmark move aimed at deepening African integration and easing cross-border travel, Chad has announced plans to eliminate entry visa requirements for citizens of all African countries beginning January 1, 2027.

The decision, unveiled by Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby, marks a significant step towards strengthening ties among African nations and advancing the vision of a more connected continent where people, businesses and opportunities can move freely across borders.

President Déby said the policy was designed to foster greater unity among African states while removing barriers that have long hindered the seamless movement of people and goods within the continent. According to him, simplifying travel procedures will not only encourage stronger people-to-people relations but also support trade, investment and regional cooperation.

The announcement places Chad among a growing group of African countries embracing visa-free travel policies as part of broader efforts to promote continental integration. Over the past few years, several nations have relaxed entry requirements for African visitors in a bid to boost tourism, commerce and economic collaboration.

Countries such as Benin Republic, Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya and Togo have already introduced measures that allow African travellers easier access, either through visa-free entry or visa-exemption arrangements.

In May, Togo joined the movement by declaring that African citizens holding valid passports could enter the country without first obtaining a visa, a policy widely welcomed by advocates of free movement across the continent.

Analysts say Chad’s latest decision aligns with ongoing efforts by African leaders and regional organisations to break down travel barriers that have historically limited interaction among African countries more than travel to destinations outside the continent.

The visa-free initiative is expected to make travel to Chad more accessible for millions of Africans while supporting the objectives of regional integration frameworks, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to create a more unified and competitive African market.

Observers believe the policy could stimulate tourism, enhance business opportunities and strengthen diplomatic and cultural exchanges between Chad and other African nations.

As the January 2027 implementation date approaches, the move is already being viewed as another major milestone in Africa’s push toward greater unity, mobility and economic cooperation, reinforcing calls for a continent where borders facilitate connections rather than restrict them.
