Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Muttaqa Rabe-Darma, has recruited 200 volunteer teachers to provide extra lessons for secondary school students preparing for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and JAMB examinations in Katsina State.

The State Coordinator of the programme, Dr Abdulsalam Abubakar, disclosed this on Friday during the training of the selected volunteers in Katsina.

He said the programme would initially operate in seven local government areas — Malumfashi, Funtua, Dutsinma, Kankia, Katsina, Mani and Daura — before being expanded to all 34 LGAs.

According to him, the 200 volunteers were selected from more than 1,050 applicants after screening, interviews and practical tests.

The volunteers, comprising university and HND graduates as well as NCE holders, will teach subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government and Accounting.

Abubakar said the volunteers were undergoing a three-day training in teaching methods, classroom management and learning strategies before their deployment.

Each of the seven participating LGAs will have two centres where the extra lessons will mainly hold at weekends, with additional sessions possible during school holidays.

He said university and HND graduates would receive a monthly allowance of N40,000, while NCE holders would receive N30,000.

The coordinator said the initiative was designed to improve students’ examination performance while providing unemployed graduates with income, teaching experience and an opportunity to contribute to education development.

He added that the organisers had secured approval from the Katsina State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to use public secondary schools as learning centres.

Student enrolment will begin through online and printed forms to be made available at the designated centres, he said.

Abubakar expressed hope that the initiative would become a long-term intervention capable of improving educational outcomes for students across Katsina State.
