The Management of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD), has received the Senate Committee on Higher Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) during an oversight visit to the university.
The committee was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, and members of the university’s management on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the permanent site of the institution in Daura, Katsina State.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor expressed delight at receiving members of the Senate Committee, describing their visit as significant to the development of the young university.
Prof. Katsayal disclosed that FUTD was established in 2023 and had already progressed to the 300-level, with some students expected to graduate as early as next year.
He explained that the university was established to develop the human capital required to support Nigeria’s expanding transportation sector, particularly the rapid development of the railway industry.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the senators for their efforts towards ensuring access to affordable and quality education for Nigerians. He, however, appealed to the committee to facilitate additional projects and infrastructure for FUTD, considering its status as a young institution and Nigeria’s only university dedicated specifically to transportation.
Prof. Katsayal also presented the university’s NELFund performance report for previous years to the committee.
He explained that, in addition to inspecting TETFund-funded projects, the committee would sensitise students on the opportunities and benefits available through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).
Responding, the Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Muhammad Muntari Dandutse, who represents the Funtua Senatorial District of Katsina State, said the committee had undertaken similar oversight visits across the remaining five geopolitical zones of the country.
Senator Dandutse commended the Vice-Chancellor and the university’s management for laying what he described as a strong foundation for the young institution.
He said the committee’s visit was aimed at ensuring value for money in the execution of TETFund projects, while also identifying areas where the university required additional support to provide the infrastructure needed for its continued growth.
The senator urged the university management to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance of facilities provided through government interventions, stressing the importance of accountability and sustainability in the development of higher education institutions.
The visit formed part of the Senate committee’s oversight responsibilities to assess ongoing and completed projects, promote accountability and identify areas requiring further government intervention in higher institutions across the country.
