With the countdown to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gathering momentum, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to convene a major national stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, signaling the beginning of intensified preparations for the country’s next electoral cycle.

The gathering, which marks 100 days to the general elections, is expected to bring together key players from across the nation’s political and governance landscape as the electoral body provides a detailed assessment of its readiness for the polls.

INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the meeting will serve as a platform for the commission to update Nigerians on critical aspects of election planning and implementation.

According to him, participants will receive briefings on the status of the voters’ register, candidate nomination processes, logistics arrangements, technological deployments and other measures being put in place to safeguard the credibility, transparency and integrity of the electoral process.

The event is expected to feature remarks by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, alongside contributions from other prominent stakeholders whose roles are considered vital to the success of the elections.

Oketola said the meeting reflects the commission’s determination to maintain openness in its operations while strengthening collaboration with institutions and groups that play significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic process.

He explained that political party leaders, security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), members of the diplomatic community, development partners and civil society organisations have all been invited to participate in the discussions.

Also expected are election observer groups, advocates for persons with disabilities, traditional and religious leaders, youth representatives and senior media executives from across the country.

Political observers see the meeting as a crucial opportunity for INEC to reassure Nigerians of its preparedness while addressing concerns that often emerge in the build-up to national elections.

The stakeholders’ summit will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre (BAT-ICC) in Abuja, with registration and attendance commencing from 10 a.m.

To ensure wider public participation and transparency, the commission said proceedings will be broadcast live on major television stations across the country and streamed through its official social media channels.

INEC also advised accredited journalists and invited guests to present their accreditation badges or invitation cards at designated security checkpoints to facilitate smooth access to the venue.

As political activities continue to intensify nationwide, Tuesday’s gathering is expected to offer fresh insight into the commission’s roadmap for conducting what could be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched elections in recent history.
