In a heartfelt demonstration of community service and advocacy, FADAK MEDIA Nig. Ltd., in collaboration with Infinity Bridals & Spa, marked this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day with a powerful outreach campaign focused on raising awareness about menstrual health and providing tangible support to women, particularly refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing in Katsina.

The sensitisation programme, which took place at the old building complex of Plaza Alhaji Abdu Mai Goro near the PDP headquarters in Katsina drew participants from across the state, including media practitioners, public health advocates, community leaders, and women from vulnerable groups.

Observed annually on 28 May, Menstrual Hygiene Day was first launched in 2014 by the Germany-based NGO WASH United. It is a global platform that promotes the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and challenges long-standing myths, stigma, and discrimination against women and girls experiencing menstruation.

At the event, Fatima Dauda Kurfi, Chief Executive Officer of FADAK MEDIA Nig. Ltd., emphasised the need to normalise discussions around menstrual health. “We must stop treating menstruation as something shameful. It is a natural biological process that affects every girl and woman. When we promote understanding, we empower lives,” she said in her keynote address.

Kurfi reiterated her organisation’s commitment to public education, social development, and women’s welfare, noting that FADAK MEDIA is widely regarded as “the Voice of the Voiceless” due to its consistent focus on underserved and marginalised populations.

Backing Women to Rise

Adding her voice to the cause, prominent entrepreneur and founder of Infinity Bridals & Spa, Hajiya Rukayya Hamza, called for sustained efforts to empower women economically and educationally. “My mission is for every woman to have the tools to stand on her own feet—whether through learning, skill-building, or entrepreneurship. A strong woman means a stronger society,” she said.

Infinity Bridals & Spa, known for its luxury beauty services in Kano, Kaduna, and Abuja, partnered in the campaign as part of its corporate social responsibility, aimed at uplifting women across northern Nigeria.

Health advocate A’isha Hamza also delivered a presentation on menstrual health practices, urging women and girls to maintain cleanliness and use proper sanitary materials. “Hygiene during menstruation is directly connected to a woman’s health, confidence, and productivity,” she explained.

Humanitarian Support for Refugees

A major highlight of the event was the distribution of sanitary kits and hygiene materials to displaced women and girls living in the old building complex. The gesture, organised in partnership with Hastey Mays Free HistH and supported by philanthropist David David, provided much-needed relief to the women, many of whom struggle with access to basic health and hygiene products.

Organisers described the act as “a lifeline of dignity” and likened the collective effort to a “powerful ship of hope” navigating through turbulent waters to bring support to those in need.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the items, which included sanitary pads, soap, body lotion, and clean water containers. Several women who spoke to our correspondent said the donation would help them maintain personal hygiene and reduce the risk of infections.

Closing with Hope and Commitment

The event ended with prayers and words of appreciation, as participants praised the organisers for their proactive approach in addressing a topic that is often ignored or stigmatised.

“This initiative did not just talk about menstrual hygiene; it brought practical help and opened the door for more conversations on women’s rights, health, and empowerment,” one participant said.

Organisers promised to continue expanding the campaign and reach more rural and displaced communities in the coming months.
