Katsina Correctional Service Marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day with Awareness Campaign for Female Inmates

The Katsina State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) on Wednesday, 28th May 2025, joined the global community to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day through a sensitization campaign aimed at promoting the health and dignity of female inmates.

The awareness initiative, organized by the Command’s Gender Desk Officer, ASC I Usman Abdullahi Idris, followed the directive of the Controller General of the Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR, mni. The program was held across various formations within the state and focused on menstrual hygiene management and the overall well-being of women in custody.

The event featured a collaborative effort with two notable Non-Governmental Organizations—Fadak Media and Infinity Bridals—who provided key support to ensure the success of the program. As part of the commemoration, the NGOs conducted interactive sessions with the inmates and donated sanitary pads to all female inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Katsina Old.

Speaking at the event, ASC I Usman Abdullahi Idris underscored the significance of menstrual health awareness in correctional settings. “Ensuring access to menstrual hygiene products and information is essential to upholding the dignity and rights of female inmates,” he said, affirming the Service’s commitment to such humanitarian values.

The NCoS Katsina Command, under the leadership of Controller of Corrections Umar Baba, reiterated its dedication to implementing gender-responsive and rights-based approaches in the management of custodial facilities across the state.
