The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG), reinforcing the government’s push for cleaner and more affordable energy solutions in Nigeria’s transportation sector.

The official handover ceremony, held on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, was attended by key stakeholders in the oil and gas industry. Speaking at the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, said the move aligns with the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s gas expansion and energy transition agenda.

“I am proud that NNPC Ltd. is playing a pivotal role in advancing the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future,” Ojulari said. He also noted the company’s strides in gas infrastructure development, distribution, and retail outlets to support the adoption of CNG nationwide.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the donation as a significant step toward economic relief and environmental responsibility. “These buses are more than just vehicles; they are instruments of social equity and economic empowerment,” he stated. He emphasized that the project reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at cutting transportation costs and leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources.

Highlighting the broader economic implications, NNPC Ltd.'s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, said the shift to CNG reduces dependence on petrol and diesel, ensuring cost savings while supporting the growth of the local gas industry.

Similarly, the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, reaffirmed the company’s leading role in the ongoing CNG commercialisation efforts.

Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, noted that the initiative reflects NNPC’s dedication to shaping a sustainable energy future that benefits both people and the environment.

The Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, commended NNPC Ltd. for its consistent support since the launch of the programme, describing the company as a “reliable partner” in driving the national energy transition.

The donation marks another milestone in the government’s efforts to promote clean energy solutions, reduce transportation costs, and enhance environmental sustainability across Nigeria.
