The Kano State Police Command has announced major breakthroughs in its continued efforts to tackle crime across the state, including the arrest of 98 suspects linked to armed robbery, thuggery, drug trafficking, and other offences, as part of a newly launched security initiative tagged Operation Kukan Kura.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, disclosed this while addressing journalists during a press briefing held at the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
The special operation, which began on July 1, 2025, is designed to reinforce community policing principles, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The initiative aims to proactively detect and prevent crimes, particularly within Kano metropolis and across its border communities.
“Operation Kukan Kura is strategically aimed at curbing thuggery-related crimes, banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and other social vices. We are involving members of the public in active policing through information sharing and crime prevention," CP Bakori stated.
Breakthroughs and Arrests
Within just 24 days, the command has arrested a total of 98 suspects linked to 21 major criminal cases, ranging from armed robbery to fraud. The breakdown includes:
4 suspected kidnappers
21 suspected armed robbers
5 suspected drug dealers
12 suspected motor vehicle thieves
4 suspected fraudsters
5 suspected thieves
47 suspected thugs
Recovered Items
A wide range of items were recovered during operations, including:
6 motor vehicles
8 tricycles
10 motorcycles
42 tubes of red solutions
35 parcels and 1,123 wraps of suspected cannabis
86 bottles of “suck and die”
Multiple quantities of Exol and diazepam tablets
16 cutlasses and 98 knives
Counterfeit $10,000
13 mobile phones
5 motor batteries and 3 motor spare tyres
Strengthening Security Strategy
CP Bakori noted that Operation Kukan Kura is being integrated into existing crime-fighting strategies such as intelligence-led raids, visibility patrols, inter-agency cooperation, and grassroots engagement with traditional leaders, youth groups, NGOs, and civil society organizations.
