In a surprising political move, prominent Katsina politician Salmanu Ahmad Gafai has officially resigned from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with immediate effect. His resignation was conveyed in a formal letter addressed to the party chairman, dated 27th July 2025.
Gafai cited personal and political reasons for his decision, describing it as a difficult but necessary step after “careful consideration.” He noted that the move was in the best interest of his political and personal aspirations.
“This decision did not come lightly,” Gafai stated in his letter. “After careful consideration and for personal reasons which I believe are in the best interest of my political and personal aspirations, I have decided to discontinue my membership with the party.”
While tendering his resignation, Gafai expressed gratitude for the relationships, experiences, and opportunities he gained during his time with the party. He also reaffirmed his continued commitment to community development and the democratic values the party upholds.
“I remain committed to the development of our community and the democratic ideals we all strive for,” he wrote, thanking the party's leadership and members for their support during his tenure.
The letter has sparked speculation regarding Gafai’s next political move, although no indication was given of whether he plans to join another party or pursue a different path in public service.
Efforts to reach officials of the SDP for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
