The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina State Command, has successfully held a one-day retreat and workshop for Special Marshals aimed at strengthening security, safety, and operational efficiency among its members.

The event, which took place on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Special Marshals Conference Hall in Katsina, was themed: “Enhancing Security and Safety Strategies for Special Marshal Operations.” It brought together Special Marshals, senior FRSC officers, and key stakeholders in the road safety sector.

In his welcome address, the State Coordinator of Special Marshals, Dr. Sani Ibrahim Yar’adua, described the retreat as a vital platform for capacity building, professional reawakening, and operational synergy. He urged participants to use the opportunity to re-evaluate their roles in promoting safer roads in Katsina State.

Representing the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Engr. Adaji Usman FCILG, the Zonal Coordinator of Zone 1, SM Usman, commended the Katsina Command for its consistency in hosting such impactful engagements. He reaffirmed the national headquarters’ commitment to improving welfare, training, and coordination among Special Marshals nationwide.

Delivering the keynote address, the Sector Commander of FRSC Katsina Command, Corps Commander Maxwell Kaltungo Lede, stressed the need for regular retraining and reorientation of marshals to meet emerging security and road safety challenges.

“The retreat is designed to routinely reawaken, retool, and reposition our gallant Special Marshals toward promoting safer transport through enhanced security consciousness, improved intelligence, and strategic enforcement,” Lede stated.

He noted that the theme was timely, considering the link between road safety and national security. According to him, “the safety of our Marshals is as vital as the safety of the motoring public we serve,” while reaffirming FRSC’s alignment with the global vision of reducing road traffic fatalities by 50 percent before 2030 under the Safe System Approach.

The Chief Judge of Katsina State, Hon. Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar, who chaired the occasion, applauded the FRSC for its commitment to orderliness on the nation’s roads. He also commended the Special Marshals for their volunteer service and declared the workshop open.

The technical session featured two scholarly presentations. Chief Route Commander Ezekiel Jani Bunu presented a paper on “Challenges Affecting Road Safety Operations and Strategies for Enhancing Security and Safety,” where he examined risk-based thinking and stakeholder roles in strengthening road safety systems.

In the second paper, Dr. Usman Isa highlighted the importance of a multi-sectoral approach that leverages data-driven planning, stakeholder synergy, and community participation in improving road safety outcomes.

Interactive discussions during the session focused on issues such as the challenges of road safety operations, the state of road safety in Nigeria, stakeholder responsibilities, and strategic ways of enhancing road safety and security. Participants contributed insights from their field experiences, and the presenters were lauded for their in-depth analysis and practical recommendations.

Certificates were presented to all participants at the end of the retreat in recognition of their active participation and contribution.

The 2025 FRSC Katsina Special Marshals Retreat was widely regarded as a success. It provided a platform for knowledge sharing, policy dialogue, and the reorientation of Special Marshals toward achieving safer and more secure road networks across Katsina State and Nigeria at large.

Participants left the event with renewed enthusiasm and a strengthened commitment to the FRSC’s vision of a nation free from road traffic deaths and serious injuries.
