The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rimi, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, who was killed during a gun battle with suspected armed bandits in Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at about 2:00 a.m. Armed bandits reportedly stormed Magaje village, shooting sporadically and rustling an unspecified number of livestock before fleeing the area.

Following a distress call, the late DPO quickly mobilised a joint security team comprising officers from neighbouring police divisions and the military. The team immediately went after the attackers.

Security operatives were able to track down and intercept the suspects around Magaje village, where a fierce exchange of gunfire took place. During the operation, three suspected bandits were neutralised and all the stolen animals were successfully recovered.

Sadly, CSP Kabir sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the confrontation. Another police officer was shot in the hand and was promptly taken to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently responding to treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, praised the courage, professionalism, and cooperation demonstrated by the joint security team. He strongly condemned the killing of the DPO, describing the late officer as upright, honest, and dedicated to his duty. He also extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer.

This unfortunate incident further highlights the persistent challenge of banditry and cattle rustling affecting parts of the state. The administration of Dikko Umaru Radda has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security operations to curb criminal activities and restore peace to affected communities.

Meanwhile, security operations in the area remain ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the bandit group.
