A former academic and public administrator, Engr. Muttaqa Rabe Darma (PhD), has declared his intention to contest for the Katsina Senatorial seat, pledging to prioritise the welfare, education and economic empowerment of his constituents.

Darma made the declaration on Tuesday during a press conference held at his residence in GRA, Katsina.

He said his ambition was driven by a desire to improve the living standards of the people rather than personal enrichment.

“I am not rich and I am not seeking to become rich. My goal is to make other people prosper and ensure that no one is poor in Katsina State,” he said.

The aspirant also emphasised his commitment to education, noting that while he is already well educated, his priority is to ensure that those he represents have access to quality education.

“I will ensure that the people I represent get the best form of education they desire,” he added.

Darma further pledged to work towards improved living conditions for constituents, stating that his target is to raise their overall standard of living.

Speaking on his preparedness for the role, he cited his experience and familiarity with legislative processes, including past interactions with members of the National Assembly.

“I understand how the Senate works and I am willing to utilise that experience for the development of my people,” he said.

He, however, clarified that his ambition should not be seen as a criticism of other aspirants or office holders.

“I am not saying I am the best, nor am I saying others have not done their work. I am only saying I can do it. This is about me and what I can offer,” he stated.

Darma disclosed that his decision followed sustained calls from supporters across the senatorial zone, which comprises 11 local government areas.

According to him, a delegation of about 50 supporters visited his residence and urged him to make his position known, prompting his acceptance after consultations with associates and political stakeholders.

Providing insight into his background, Darma said he had served as a university lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Bayero University, Kano, and held managerial roles in the power sector, including at the former National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), now PHCN.

He also worked in the private sector, including automobile assembly and oil industry operations, and later served as a consultant on water supply projects.

In public service, he held several key positions in Katsina State, including Director at Government House, Executive Director of the State Environmental Protection Agency, and Commissioner in multiple ministries such as Rural Development, Women Affairs, Works, Housing and Transport.

At the federal level, he served as Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), where he said he contributed to stabilising the organisation.

Darma added that he has remained active in politics since 1989 and has contested for various elective positions, including local government chairman, House of Representatives, governorship and deputy governorship.

He stressed that participation in elections is a fundamental aspect of democratic practice.

“The essence of politics is to present yourself to the people for their mandate. Whether you win or lose is ultimately determined by God,” he said.

The aspirant concluded by reaffirming his readiness to serve and deliver effective representation if elected.
