The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed investigators and heads of investigative units across the country to place greater emphasis on the proper documentation and management of suspects’ information, describing it as critical to enhancing intelligence-led policing and modernising criminal investigations in Nigeria.
Disu gave the directive at the opening of a one-day Crime and Incident Database Impact Sensitisation Workshop organised by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The workshop focused on the Suspects’ Information Capturing Process under the Nigeria Police Force Crime and Incident Database (NPF-ICD) Centre Project, an initiative designed to improve crime analysis, intelligence gathering, evidence-based investigations, inter-agency cooperation, and crime prevention efforts nationwide.
Addressing participants, the police chief underscored the growing importance of data-driven policing, noting that contemporary law enforcement requires more than traditional investigative approaches.
According to him, accurate, timely and reliable data have become indispensable tools for effective policing, helping security agencies respond more efficiently to emerging criminal threats.
Disu described the Crime and Incident Database Centre as a key national security resource capable of improving investigative outcomes, monitoring crime patterns, identifying habitual offenders, linking criminal activities across different jurisdictions and supporting informed operational decisions.
He reiterated the commitment of the police leadership to deploying technology, innovation and intelligence-based strategies to improve policing standards and urged Commands and Formations nationwide to strictly adhere to established procedures for capturing suspects’ information.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the IGP also encouraged participants to contribute actively during the workshop and propose practical measures that would improve operational effectiveness and strengthen the Force’s crime management framework.
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to leverage digital technology and intelligence tools to enhance public safety, improve service delivery and build a more professional, accountable and citizen-centred policing system.
