The family of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who died while in the custody of suspected bandits, has described his death as a martyrdom, expressing faith and submission to the will of God despite the tragic circumstances.

Speaking to journalists in Katsina on Sunday, Mr Isyaka Rabe-Abubakar, the late general’s son, said the family had accepted the loss with courage and gratitude to Allah.

“We believe that whatever happened to our father was ordained by Allah. We also believe that he died a martyr and will be rewarded with Paradise,” he said.

The retired army officer was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 along the Matazu-Katsina Road by suspected bandits. The Katsina State Government confirmed his death on Saturday, while efforts are still ongoing to secure the release of his wife, who remains in captivity.

Reflecting on his father’s life, Isyaka described him as a deeply religious, humble and compassionate individual who devoted himself to helping others.

According to him, the former Director of Defence Information was known for his simplicity and peaceful disposition, qualities that often concealed his distinguished military career.

“If someone met him without knowing his background, they would never imagine the position he held. He was humble, peaceful and always ready to offer guidance,” he said.

The deceased’s son noted that the family had relied on faith to navigate the difficult period since the abduction.

On the circumstances surrounding the recovery of his father’s remains, Isyaka said only government authorities could provide accurate information, adding that the family was yet to establish the exact cause of death.

“There have been different accounts. Some people mentioned a snake bite, while others suggested tetanus. Only Allah truly knows how he died,” he stated.

He disclosed that his mother is still being held by the abductors and appealed for sustained efforts to secure her safe release.

Isyaka also condemned those responsible for the kidnapping and death of his father, insisting that the family remained deeply hurt by the incident.

“We will not forgive those behind this act,” he said.

The late Maj.-Gen. Abubakar was remembered by relatives and associates as a disciplined military officer, mentor and advocate of peaceful coexistence whose legacy of service and humility will endure.
