Gov Engages Islamic Clerics and Stakeholders on Community-Driven Security Solutions
The Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has intensified efforts to address insecurity in the state through broad-based engagement with Islamic clerics and key stakeholders aimed at developing community-driven solutions to banditry and kidnapping.
Briefing journalists after the meeting held at Government House, Katsina, Governor Radda said the dialogue with religious leaders was necessary to deepen understanding of the crisis and explore sustainable solutions beyond conventional security approaches.
"The purpose of this meeting was to hear directly from Islamic clerics, to understand their perspectives on the current security challenges, and to seek their advice on the way forward," the Governor said.
He stressed that the fight against banditry cannot be left to security agencies alone, noting that community participation remains critical to achieving lasting peace.
"This problem cannot be solved only through the efforts of security agencies. Individuals and communities have very important roles to play in curbing banditry and kidnapping," he added.
Governor Radda explained that findings have shown that elements within local communities are often involved in supporting criminal networks, including intelligence sharing and the trade of stolen livestock.
"Most of their supply chains, information networks, and even the sale of stolen animals involve people living among us. This is why there is a need to sensitize the entire community so that everyone plays their part," he stated.
He described Islamic clerics as key partners in promoting moral discipline and shaping societal values, stressing that their guidance is essential in addressing insecurity.
"Clerics play a vital role in guiding the moral values of society. We presented the challenges to them and sought their counsel as we work toward lasting solutions," he said.
The Governor further highlighted ongoing security measures taken by the state government, including executive actions aimed at disrupting criminal logistics.
"We have taken decisive steps, including banning the use of motorcycles in some affected local government areas such as Musawa and Matazu, as well as restricting the use of POS machines and informal charging points that facilitate criminal activities," he explained.
He also disclosed that the sale of petroleum products has been restricted across the state as part of broader efforts to limit the operational capacity of armed groups.
"These measures were introduced after consultations with community leaders from affected areas, and we will continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure peace and stability," he said.
Governor Radda also announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to further strengthen security operations in Katsina State. Bola Ahmed Tinubu
"I want to appreciate Mr. President for approving our request to recruit 1,000 young, able-bodied men and women as forest guards. They will work alongside conventional security agencies and community watch groups," he stated.
He added that the recruits will be properly equipped to effectively discharge their responsibilities in safeguarding communities across forested and remote areas of the state.
Governor Radda further commended the Federal Government for its support and the increased deployment of security personnel to Katsina.
"The level of deployment we have seen from the military, police, and DSS is highly encouraging. This is a coordinated effort we deeply appreciate," he noted.
He called on citizens to remain vigilant and actively support government initiatives aimed at restoring peace.
"Security is a collective responsibility. We urge all citizens to cooperate with authorities and contribute to peace in our communities," he said.
