Katsina Approves Solar Lighting for Tsangaya Schools, Unveils Climate and Enterprise Initiatives

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has approved the procurement and installation of 30 solar-powered streetlights in each of the Tsangaya schools across the state's 361 wards as part of efforts to improve learning conditions and expand access to education.

The governor's Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the initiative formed part of a series of strategic interventions aimed at enhancing education, boosting economic opportunities and promoting climate-responsive governance in the state.

According to the statement, the approvals were granted during the Ninth Regular Meeting of the State Executive Council for 2026, held at the Government House and chaired by the governor.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr Bala Zango, said the decisions reflected the administration's commitment to implementing people-centred policies aligned with its development agenda.

Speaking on the solar lighting project, the Special Adviser on Power and Energy, Dr Hafiz Ahmed, said the initiative was designed to improve learning conditions within the Almajiri education system, particularly during evening study periods.

He noted that the project would enhance safety and facilitate greater access to education for pupils in Tsangaya schools.

"This initiative will create a more conducive learning environment in Tsangaya schools and support ongoing efforts to modernise and integrate the Almajiri education system," Ahmed said.

The council also approved the adoption and institutionalisation of Climate Change Budget Tagging across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Local Government Councils.

Ahmed explained that the policy would apply to all climate-related projects, programmes, procurement activities and public expenditures across the state.

He said the reform was expected to strengthen Katsina's climate change response while promoting transparency, accountability and efficiency in public financial management.

According to him, the initiative would enhance socio-economic resilience, improve agricultural productivity, strengthen water resource management and support sustainable development across key sectors.

Ahmed recalled that Gov. Radda recently participated in the ChangeNOW 2026 Summit in Paris, France, where he became the first Nigerian leader to deliver a keynote address at the global event.

He said the governor used the platform to highlight climate transformation efforts in Katsina and showcase the state's renewable energy initiatives, including plans to revitalise the Lambar Rimi Wind Farm.

"The latest approvals further demonstrate the administration's determination to translate global engagements into tangible development outcomes for the people of Katsina State," Ahmed added.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Katsina State Enterprise Development Agency (KASEDA), Dr Babangida Ruma, announced that the council had approved the award of a contract for the fabrication and installation of 2,000 standardised modular kiosks under the Katsina Road Corridor Enterprise Infrastructure Programme.

Ruma said the kiosks would replace makeshift roadside structures currently used by nano and micro-scale businesses, providing safer, more organised and durable trading spaces.

He explained that the structures would be built with galvanised steel frames, reinforced components, lockable doors and proper ventilation to ensure security and longevity.

According to him, the project would not only improve the aesthetics of urban corridors but also strengthen small business operations and stimulate economic activities across the state.

The approvals, officials said, underscore the Radda administration's commitment to building a resilient, inclusive and economically vibrant Katsina State through strategic investments and forward-looking reforms.
