The Katsina State Police Command says it has foiled a cattle rustling attempt in Charanchi Local Government Area and recovered 117 livestock allegedly stolen by suspected bandits.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the operation was carried out in collaboration with the military and members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC).

The police said credible intelligence received at about 6:00 p.m. on June 30 indicated that armed bandits had attacked Saburu and Billiri villages in Charanchi LGA, where they rustled domestic animals.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Charanchi mobilised tactical police teams alongside military personnel and members of the KSCWC to the affected area.

The statement said the joint security team strategically blocked the suspected bandits' escape routes, leading to a gun battle during which the attackers fled due to what the police described as the superior tactics of the security operatives.

The operation led to the recovery of 43 cows and 74 sheep, bringing the total number of recovered livestock to 117.

Police said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, CP Aliyu Umar Fage, commended the operatives for their bravery, vigilance and effective collaboration with other security agencies.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to combat crime across the state.
