Trump Bars CNN, Politico, MS NOW from White House, Threatens More Media Bans

U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his long-running battle with major news organisations by announcing a ban on CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House, accusing the outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news” about his administration.

Trump made the announcement on Friday through a post on his Truth Social platform, declaring that the three organisations would no longer be allowed access to the White House because of what he called false and misleading reporting. He also signalled that other media organisations could face similar restrictions in the future.

The president argued that news outlets should not be permitted to continually publish what he described as “fiction and lies” while covering the White House and his administration. During remarks to reporters later in the Oval Office, Trump said the decision was not tied to any single story but was based on what he called years of unfavourable coverage.

When asked about the possibility of additional bans, Trump specifically mentioned The New York Times and The Washington Post, both of which he has frequently criticised.

The White House began implementing the directive on Saturday, with journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW reporting that they were denied entry to the White House grounds and had their press credentials deactivated or confiscated.

The move immediately sparked a wave of criticism from media organisations, press freedom advocates and constitutional scholars, many of whom argued that the restrictions could face significant legal challenges under the First Amendment.

CNN defended its reporting and warned that any attempt to block journalists from covering the presidency would amount to an unconstitutional interference with press freedom. Politico also vowed to continue reporting on the administration while promising to defend its constitutional rights.

MS NOW indicated that it was considering all available options to challenge the restriction, maintaining that independent journalism plays a vital role in holding governments accountable.

Legal experts noted that while presidents generally have broad authority over access to certain events and private meetings within the White House, broader restrictions affecting accredited journalists and press facilities could face constitutional scrutiny. Previous attempts to revoke press access have also resulted in court challenges.

Press freedom groups condemned the decision, arguing that barring journalists because of their reporting raises serious concerns about government interference with independent media and public access to information.
