Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Kano have foiled a bandits' attack along the Kano–Katsina border, arrested two suspected terrorists and recovered 97 cattle and 50 sheep stolen during the raid.

The operation took place on Tuesday at about 5:45 p.m. around the Yankamaye–Rimaye axis after troops acted on credible intelligence that armed bandits were moving rustled livestock through the area.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops deployed at Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), supported by a response force, strategically positioned themselves at suspected crossing points and intercepted the fleeing bandits.

The troops engaged the suspects in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the livestock and flee towards Katsina State.

The Army said two suspected terrorists were arrested during the operation, while one motorcycle, 97 cattle and 50 sheep were recovered. It added that the recovered livestock had been returned to their rightful owners.

However, the operation recorded one casualty as a local vigilante, Mallam Yusuf Adamu, 47, of Yanchibi Village, was killed after he was caught in the crossfire.

The Nigerian Army expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the Yanchibi community over the incident.

It added that troops were continuing clearance operations in the area to track down the fleeing bandits.

Commander of the 3 Brigade, Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, commended the troops for their professionalism, vigilance and courage, urging them to sustain pressure on criminal elements operating within the area.

He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, describing public cooperation as vital to the ongoing fight against banditry and other forms of criminality.
