‘Your Vote Counts’: Falz Urges Nigerians to Reject Apathy, Demands Electoral Reforms Ahead of Elections

Popular Nigerian rapper, actor and activist, Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz, has called on Nigerians, especially young people, to reject voter apathy and actively participate in elections, insisting that politicians would not spend huge sums on vote-buying if votes did not truly matter.

Speaking on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the lessons from previous elections, Falz challenged the growing belief that election outcomes are predetermined, arguing that such thinking only benefits politicians who rely on public disillusionment to suppress voter turnout.

According to him, widespread voter participation remains one of the most effective ways to safeguard the integrity of elections and make manipulation more difficult.

He maintained that the persistent efforts by political actors to influence election results through vote-buying, intimidation and other tactics are proof that every vote carries significant weight.

“If votes did not matter, there would be no reason for politicians to spend money buying them or deploying every available strategy to influence the outcome,” he said, urging citizens to resist the temptation to stay away from the polls.

Calls for Massive Voter Turnout

Falz stressed that Nigeria needs an overwhelming number of voters at the ballot box to ensure that the true will of the people is reflected in election outcomes.

He described excuses that votes do not count as outdated and counterproductive, arguing that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the electoral process.

The entertainer noted that one of the biggest lessons from the 2023 elections is the need for more Nigerians to vote, saying large voter turnout would make it increasingly difficult for anyone to manipulate results.

Urges Youths to Register

The activist also encouraged eligible Nigerians who are yet to obtain their voter cards to take advantage of the online voter registration process provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said technological advancements have simplified registration, allowing citizens to complete the process from their homes through the INEC portal.

According to him, the availability of online registration removes many of the traditional barriers that previously discouraged participation, leaving little justification for eligible voters to remain unregistered.

Pushes for Real-Time Electronic Transmission of Results

Beyond voter participation, Falz advocated comprehensive electoral reforms, particularly the full implementation of live electronic transmission of election results.

He argued that real-time transmission would significantly improve transparency, enhance public trust and reduce controversies surrounding election outcomes.

The rapper questioned why such a system has not been fully adopted despite the enormous resources allocated to election management over the years.

He noted that concerns about network connectivity should not be sufficient grounds to abandon reforms capable of strengthening the credibility of the electoral process.

According to him, if authorities are genuinely committed to delivering free, fair and credible elections, technological challenges should be resolved rather than used as reasons to limit transparency.

Distances Himself from Political Endorsements

Falz also clarified that he has never publicly endorsed any politician or political party, despite widespread assumptions during previous election cycles.

He said his position has consistently been to encourage Nigerians to vote and ensure their voices are heard through democratic processes rather than campaigning for specific candidates.

The entertainer explained that he remains cautious about openly backing politicians, citing repeated disappointments from Nigeria’s political class.

He noted that the country often witnesses the same political figures rotating through positions of power, making it difficult to wholeheartedly vouch for any candidate.

Music as a Tool for Social Change

Known for using his music to address social and political issues, Falz defended the role of protest music in shaping public consciousness and inspiring action.

He described music as a powerful force capable of influencing emotions, sparking conversations and motivating citizens to engage more actively in society.

According to him, socially conscious music can help galvanise people and encourage them to demand accountability from leaders.

The award-winning artiste said his continued focus on themes such as corruption, inequality, bad governance and social justice stems from the realities facing ordinary Nigerians.

He vowed to keep speaking out through his music until meaningful progress is achieved, insisting that the nation’s challenges cannot be ignored or swept aside.

“Somebody has to talk about these issues,” he said, adding that artists have a responsibility to reflect the realities of their environment and contribute to national conversations.

Responding to suggestions that activism has overshadowed his music career, Falz said he is comfortable being recognised as a positive influence.

Falz also weighed in on Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges, arguing that citizens are struggling with rising inflation, increasing living costs, poverty and insecurity.

He contended that many Nigerians have yet to experience the improvements promised by the government and said the administration should ultimately be judged by its performance.

According to him, the realities confronting ordinary citizens suggest that the government has not done enough to justify calls for continued patience from Nigerians.

Despite his criticisms and concerns, Falz expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying he remains committed to encouraging citizens to play their part in building a better country.
