Amupitan Receives Okun Development Association Delegation, Reaffirms Commitment to Credible Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission's commitment to conducting credible, transparent and lawful elections across Nigeria.

Prof. Amupitan gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of the Okun Development Association (ODA), led by its President-General, Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, during a courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Rotimi congratulated the INEC Chairman on his appointment, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of his integrity, competence and outstanding record of public service.

He said the appointment had brought pride to the Okun people, noting that the community had a longstanding reputation for producing individuals of exemplary character and professional excellence.

The ODA President-General also assured Prof. Amupitan of the continued prayers and support of the Okun people as he leads Nigeria's electoral management body in strengthening democratic governance.

Responding, Prof. Amupitan thanked the delegation for the visit and their unwavering support since his appointment as INEC Chairman.

He explained that the demands of his office had delayed the meeting, adding that he had not visited his hometown since assuming office because of the enormous responsibilities associated with overseeing the nation's electoral process.

Describing his appointment as "a call to service," the INEC Chairman said the task of managing Nigeria's elections requires integrity, impartiality and dedication.

He expressed appreciation to the Okun community for its prayers and encouragement, describing them as a source of strength in the discharge of his national assignment.

Prof. Amupitan also acknowledged the growing challenge posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital era, stressing that INEC would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities professionally, independently and in strict compliance with the law.
