Sheriff’s Role in Tinubu Campaign Reopens Debate Over Past Boko Haram Allegations

The renewed political involvement of former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign has revived debate over past allegations linking the former governor to Boko Haram.

Comrade Aliyu Adam Usman of the Nigeria Rescue & Renewal Movement (NRRM), in a statement, said Sheriff’s role in the campaign had brought renewed attention to allegations that have been made against him over the years.

Sheriff, who served as Borno governor between 2003 and 2011, has in the past been accused by critics of having links with or supporting Boko Haram. The allegations have largely been associated with the period when the insurgency intensified in the North-East during his tenure as governor.

However, Sheriff has repeatedly denied any relationship with Boko Haram or involvement in its activities.

In 2014, he said he was prepared to face an investigation if credible evidence was presented to substantiate the allegations against him.

The allegations have nevertheless continued to feature in political discourse, particularly whenever Sheriff takes on prominent political roles.

His recent involvement in efforts to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election bid has therefore renewed attention on his political record, particularly in Borno and the wider North-East.

Sheriff remains a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and has held several leadership positions, including serving as national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The renewed political activity comes as parties and political actors intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with efforts focused on building alliances and securing support across the country.

While Sheriff’s participation in the campaign has attracted political attention, the allegations concerning his alleged links with Boko Haram remain unproven and have been consistently rejected by the former governor.

Usman’s comments have consequently brought the issue back into public debate, particularly over the role of politicians with controversial political histories in the forthcoming election.
