The Katsina State Executive Council has approved the establishment of the Katsina State Model United Nations Organisation (MUNDO), a youth-focused initiative aimed at equipping young people with leadership skills, global exposure and access to emerging opportunities.
The approval was granted during the Council’s 15th session and is described as a strategic investment in the development of young people across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Executive Secretary, Katsina State Development Management Board, on behalf of the people of Katsina State, MUNDO is designed to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, networks and exposure needed to compete effectively in an increasingly interconnected world.
The organisation will provide a structured platform for young people to develop practical skills in diplomacy, international relations, public speaking, negotiation, policy analysis, research, leadership, civic engagement and problem-solving.
Under the initiative, young people are expected to participate in Model United Nations simulations, policy dialogues, leadership programmes, mentorship activities, research and other platforms that could connect them with national and international opportunities.
The statement explained that MUNDO would go beyond simulations and conferences by serving as a leadership and opportunity pipeline through which young people can discover their potential, build confidence, develop professional networks and translate their knowledge into practical contributions to their communities and the state.
It added that the initiative was particularly designed to address the disadvantage faced by young people who may have limited access to global exposure and opportunities because of their geographical location.
Through partnerships with relevant institutions, development organisations, educational institutions and international platforms, MUNDO will seek to improve young people’s access to scholarships, fellowships, internships, leadership programmes, international conferences, academic opportunities and professional networks.
The state government also emphasised the need for youth development programmes to move beyond short-term interventions towards sustainable systems capable of continuously identifying, preparing, connecting and empowering young people.
MUNDO is expected to provide opportunities for young people to learn from one another, interact with experienced professionals and policymakers, examine global issues, develop solutions to local challenges and promote responsible citizenship and purposeful leadership.
The government described the establishment of the organisation as an investment in the future leadership, intellectual capital and global competitiveness of Katsina State.
“As Katsina continues to position itself for sustainable development, the State Government recognises that its greatest long-term asset is its people and that young people must be given the tools, exposure and platforms necessary to shape the future,” the statement said.
The initiative, it added, reflects the state’s ambition to prepare its young people “not merely to participate in the future, but to lead it.”
