The Chartered Institute of Directors (CloD) Nigeria has commended the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) for its unwavering commitment to ethical leadership, operational excellence, and sound corporate governance, especially in banking supervision and depositor protection.
This commendation was made by the President and Chairman of CloD Council, Alhaji Tijani Borodo, during a courtesy visit by the Institute’s Governing Council to the NDIC Headquarters in Abuja.
Alhaji Borodo highlighted the NDIC’s notable achievements in bank liquidation and resolution, stating that the Corporation’s consistent implementation of its mandate has significantly contributed to the stability of the nation’s banking sector and financial system. He identified poor corporate governance as a key factor in bank failures and emphasized the Institute’s role in holding directors accountable for unethical conduct.
“As the apex professional body for directors in Nigeria, CloD has instituted mechanisms to sanction directors found culpable of unethical practices,” he stated, reaffirming the Institute’s dedication to fostering good governance across all sectors, particularly the financial industry.
He further described the visit as an opportunity to deepen collaboration between the two institutions, especially in capacity building through board induction programmes, executive leadership development, and governance training tailored to directors in both the public and private sectors.
In his response, NDIC Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Bello Hassan, expressed appreciation to the CloD for its efforts in promoting professionalism and corporate accountability. He reiterated NDIC’s dedication to depositor protection and financial system stability, underscoring the importance of corporate governance in building resilient banks and maintaining public confidence.
Mr. Hassan reaffirmed the Corporation’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with the Institute in promoting a culture of sound corporate governance within the NDIC and across the financial sector.
