Tension flared in Tandama community of Danja Local Government Area, Katsina State, as irate youths launched an attack on the Hisbah office on Thursday evening, June 12, 2025, leaving several officials injured.

The violence reportedly erupted around 6:10 p.m. following a heated confrontation between Hisbah operatives and a group of youths over the latter’s choice of hairstyle. Witnesses say the Hisbah officials had confronted the youths, deeming their haircuts “immoral,” which sparked outrage and escalated into a full-blown attack on the office.

Several Hisbah officials were injured in the fracas and have been taken to Danja General Hospital for medical attention.

In a statement, the Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The incident has reignited public debate about the conduct and powers of Hisbah groups, with many residents accusing them of overreaching their mandate and infringing on personal freedoms.

“The continuous interference of Hisbah in private matters is becoming unbearable. They need to be regulated before things get out of hand,” a community elder told Inside Katsina.

Civil society groups and rights advocates have also urged the Katsina State Government to review Hisbah’s operations, citing concerns over human rights violations and the growing risk of community unrest.

As investigations continue, residents are calling for calm and for authorities to find a lasting solution that ensures both moral guidance and respect for individual rights.
