FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Forum of Governing Council Members of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (FOGOCOM) has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider their position, and suspend its two-week warning strike in the overall interest of Nigerian students and the stability of the nation’s education system.

FOGOCOM expressed deep concern over the recurring industrial actions that continue to disrupt academic activities in public universities, stressing that strikes have severe consequences on students’ learning progress, mental well-being, and the credibility of Nigerian universities both locally and internationally.

While acknowledging the legitimate concerns of ASUU regarding improved welfare, infrastructure, and funding, the Forum emphasized that such demands can be pursued more effectively through constructive dialogue and sustained negotiation with the Federal Government, rather than industrial action.

In an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Friday 17th October 2025, the leadership of the Forum deemed it necessary to lend her voice by appealing to ASUU, and the Federal government to find a common ground in order to avoid further distrupttion of our nation academic calendar, They also noted that the Federal Government, as the primary custodian of public education, should remain committed to creating an enabling environment for quality learning, research, and staff welfare across tertiary institutions.

According to the statement:

“Strike is never a good thing for a developing nation like Nigeria. Each disruption weakens our educational foundation and limits students focus, and the future opportunities of our dedicated students. We therefore appeal to ASUU and the Federal Government to find common ground for the sake of our children and the future of educational stability in our country.”
FOGOCOM reaffirmed its willingness / readiness to mediate and support any constructive engagement between ASUU and the Federal Government that will ensure a lasting solution to the persistent disagreement between ASUU and the Federal government in order to advance our education sector.
