Katsina State Government has confirmed that no fewer than 11 people were killed in a bandit attack on Gwalgoro village in Kankia Local Government Area, even as security forces earlier repelled another assault and neutralised several bandits.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, the incident was described as a two-phase operation that occurred on Saturday.
According to the statement, intelligence reports indicated that a suspected bandit kingpin, identified as Muhammadu Fulani, had mobilised armed men towards strategic locations, including bridges in Kankia LGA, with intent to carry out attacks. The development was promptly reported by residents to security agencies.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kankia was said to have led a joint security team to intercept the group. During the operation, security forces engaged the bandits, neutralised several of them, and recovered eight motorcycles as well as rustled cattle. The recovered items are currently in police custody.
However, the statement said the same group, apparently in retaliation, launched a subsequent attack around midday on Gwalgoro village in the Gyaza/Kunduru ward, killing 11 civilians.
The state government condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of terror against innocent people, and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
It also commended security personnel for their swift and professional response, while urging residents to continue providing timely intelligence to aid ongoing security efforts.
The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu.
