Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has officially stepped down from his role, citing personal reasons and a desire to return to journalism.
Soneye’s resignation, announced in a statement over the weekend, came as a surprise to many within media and public relations circles. He explained that the decision would allow him to spend more time with his family and explore new career opportunities.
“It has been a profound honour to serve both the company and our country,” Soneye said in his farewell message. “This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence.”
He expressed deep appreciation to media professionals and stakeholders for their support over his 20-month tenure at NNPCL, stating: “Your role in building a vibrant and effective communications presence for our national energy company has been nothing short of invaluable.”
Industry figures have praised his tenure. Maureen Chigbo, President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), commended his professional handling of the company’s public image. “His effective communication style and solid relationship with the media earned him two major awards from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR),” she said.
Chigbo further noted Soneye’s strong relationship with the media community, particularly GOCOP, and expressed hope that his successor would build on his legacy.
In closing his statement, Soneye affirmed his continued support for the NNPCL: “I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage in support of the company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future.”
